Keri, secular homeschool mom and blogger at Little Blue House Homeschool, smiling while sharing homeschool tips.

Hey there! I’m Keri, a homeschooling mom to two adventurous boys, and I’m so glad you’re here! When I started this journey, all I wanted was a learning space where curiosity thrived, joy filled our days, and flexibility. Now, two years later, I’m sharing what I’ve learned along the way in hopes of inspiring and helping other homeschool families like yours.

Why I Started Homeschooling

When my second son was born, I felt a strong pull to leave my corporate job and stay home with my kids. I wanted to give them an education that truly fit their needs—one that encouraged critical thinking, creativity, and a love for learning. So in September 2022, we officially started homeschooling, and it’s been an incredible adventure ever since!

I firmly believe that homeschooling should be fun, flexible, and stress-free. That’s why I take an eclectic, flow-based approach—where we allow curiosity to guide our learning while still keeping a solid structure in place.

I can vividly remember the first week of homeschooling and how I had no idea what I was doing. At that time, my oldest was in “Pre-K” and my youngest was three. I remember thinking that I had to keep them busy all day long, mimicking a traditional school schedule. It didn’t take long before I felt completely overwhelmed, trying to juggle activities, lessons, and keeping them engaged every minute of the day. I knew something had to change.

I spent hours reading homeschool blogs, watching YouTube videos, and absorbing everything I could about different homeschooling approaches. Eventually, we landed on Blossom & Root Curriculum, along with some additional workbooks to supplement our learning. It honestly took me a solid year to figure out what worked and what didn’t. Looking back, I now realize that homeschooling isn’t about recreating public school—it’s about creating a learning environment that works for your family.

After two years, I finally feel like I have a good grasp on what I look for in curriculums and that I truly appreciate an open-and-go curriculum—one that doesn’t require tons of extra prep or outsourcing materials. Through trial and error, I’ve learned how to create a balance between structured learning and child-led exploration, and that’s exactly what I want to share with you on this blog.

A Secular Homeschool Approach

I’m very much a secular homeschool mom, which means I teach my kids evidence-based, critical thinking, and inclusive topics. We focus on science-backed education while encouraging open-minded discussions.

Our homeschool follows a “flow” schedule, meaning we allow plenty of flexibility while ensuring all subjects and activities are covered. This approach allows us to spend more time on topics that need extra attention and move faster through things that come more naturally. Some days, math might take 15 minutes—other days, it takes an hour. And that’s okay! Homeschooling isn’t about checking off boxes; it’s about creating a learning environment that works for our kids.
